About Me

As a career professional in education and related fields, I know what high school teachers and college professors expect in the classroom, and I understand the skills students must master to achieve success. I founded Stuhr Education in 2014 to provide tutoring that draws on my expertise and is truly customized to each student’s unique strengths, weaknesses, learning styles, and needs.

Education

B.A., English and philosophy, Williams College, Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude

M.A., English Language and Literature, University of Michigan

Ph.D., English, Northwestern University

College Teaching

Throughout 20 years at the college and university level, I have taught English, literature, writing, and philosophy courses at a variety of institutions. These include Lake Forest College (IL), Northwestern University (IL), The College of Lake County (IL), West Chester University (PA), St. Anselm College (NH), and Goldey Beacom College (DE), where I received the Excellence in Teaching Award.

Educational Publishing

As a freelance editor, writer, and subject matter expert for 18 years, I planned, wrote, and edited textbooks, workbooks, and other instructional materials for students and teachers. Projects included print and digital products in English language arts, reading, grammar, writing, literature, vocabulary, and ACT and SAT preparation. I applied my knowledge of ACT College and Career Readiness and Common Core Standards for reading, literature, and writing to develop high-quality lessons and learning resources for students of all ability levels from elementary school through college.

Test Prep and English Tutoring

For more than ten years I have worked at a major national tutoring learning center. My specialties there include tutor training, one-on-one ACT and SAT test preparation, English and reading tutoring, assistance with college application essays, and school assignments. I work with a diverse group of learners—from grade 3 through grad school—and welcome the opportunity to create customized study materials to meet the unique needs of each student.

In addition, I am a trained literacy tutor with four years of experience working one-on-one with adult students on core reading and writing skills, most recently with Literacy Volunteers of Lake County, Illinois.

Community Service

As a New Trier grad and Lake Forest mom of two (both graduates of Lake Forest High School), I know the needs of North Shore families and the academic challenges and pressures facing students. I have participated in a variety of school-related activities and organizations, volunteering in my children’s classrooms and working with faculty and administrators of Lake Forest districts 67 and 115 as a parent member of several committees.
